Google Acquired Like.com

On the heels of Facebook’s acquisition of Hotpotato, the web search giant Google has just bought Like.com for around $100 million. Like.com owned and operated by Munjal Shah is a visual search engine. It’s a really unique site that is amazing to use and browse through.

Like.com CEO Shah announced that “Since 2006, Like.com has been moving the frontiers of eCommerce forward one step at a time. We were the first to bring visual search to shopping, the first to build an automated cross-matching system for clothing, and more. We didn’t stop there, and don’t have plans to stop now. We see joining Google as a way to supersize our vision and supercharge our passion. This is something we are truly excited about.”

Back in 2005, Google was considering buying a company called Riya which was Shah’s first try at image facial recognition and tagging for consumers, but Google changed their mind and gave up on that website. In 2009, Riya was closed and the company Like.com hence was created.

So what is Like.com? It’s a visual search engine and the company also went further to set up a few smaller sites that engage themselves in fashion and e-commerce.

No one is really sure whether Google wishes for a mini fashion empire but perhaps they do. Nobody knows. Only time will tell.
